And then exactly 4 steps further down the road, we saw something even scarier. It was also alive but we didn't put our hands anywhere near it until it was good and dead.
It was an exciting walk to our hunt on Saturday evening. Not only did we find a huge tarantula (which we harassed and videoed to show the kids), but we walked up on this rattler. It's not that we were excited to see this mean ol' snake, but we were never in any danger. Plus, it was my very first time to get rattled at and I've been waiting for it to happen b/c there are a lot of rattlesnakes out there. It was on the road and we saw him about the time he started rattling at us. We didn't have a gun to shoot him with, so Jeff dispatched him with his bow. Shot him right in the head from about 10 feet away. I videoed the entire time and am working on getting some footage on here. But it's not easy and I don't know if it will happen. You'll just have to trust me when I tell you that it was incredible and made being very, very late to our hunting spot so worth it. And yes, most of you do want to see it on video.

Poor snake, all he wanted to do was warn you away so he could flee. Rattle snakes actually do lots of good for the ecology and should not be killed because they rattle.
Was an impressive shot though to kill it with an arrow.
Yeah, not really. This guy was mean and fairly aggressive. Plus it was blocking the path to our hunt and was in an area where we often walk, sometimes with the kids, and sometimes in the dark. He didn't need to live there. His cousins can help the ecology all they want...as long as they stay off our main travel paths and away from my kids. Same goes for copperheads and those stinky water moccasins. If they flee, they go free. If they get nasty, they get their heads chopped off and good riddance.
